Atlantic Coast in the US state of Maine

Maine Cities, Climate and Sights

Maine is a state of the United States of America and part of the New England region. The origin of the name is unclear, the name may be a short form of “Mainland”, i.e. “Mainland” in German. I also find that logical and ok, if you imagine the immigrants who moved to the West by ship at the time of immigration. Maine’s nickname is “The Pine Tree State”. With more than 91,000 km², it is about the size of Portugal or Hungary.

The Atlantic Ocean is to the southeast of Maine. In the northeast lies the Canadian province of New Brunswick.

To the northwest is the Canadian province of Quebec. To the southwest is New Hampshire.

The capital of Maine is the small town of Augusta, which has fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. The region lives from the paper, steel, food and computer industries. See Maine counties list.

Maine is the easternmost state on the very edge of the United States. Maine is the US state that has the highest percentage of forests. Something like the “green lung” of the USA. Since more than 90% of the land area is covered with pine trees, among other things, the state is nicknamed “Pine Tree State”. The beautiful nature attracts many tourists to Maine. Almost 23% (11,715 km²) of the more than 91,000 km² area is water.

Weather and climate in Maine

In Maine, mercury often rises to 35 degrees Celsius in the summer. Winters are long and frosty.

In the transitional period in spring and autumn, the temperatures are somewhat more moderate.

Quite pleasant for human well-being, but a bit cool, especially in the evenings.

Lakes and rivers are covered with ice for months, but then ice fishing is of course possible and some freaks like to do it.

Many sports fans can be found near the larger cities on the frozen ice surfaces of the lakes. In summer, on the other hand, you can find cool refreshment in the many forests, or in the beautiful Acadia National Park.

Best time to visit Maine

The best time to travel is from May to September, when it doesn’t get too cold at night and the temperatures are nice and warm during the day.

However, if you prefer it a little cooler, plan a trip to Maine for the rest of the year.

Due to the many forests, the area is excellent for hikers, (animal) photographers and nature lovers in general.

Bathers meet in midsummer, for example, in Arcadia National Park. There are three beaches, but only one of these beaches is also a bathing beach.
