Besides Hawaii, Alaska is the only state that does not border on another US state. Although Alaska is on the North American continent, it is separated from the state of Washington by about 800 km of the Canadian state of British Columbia. The capital, Juneau, although located on the mainland, cannot be reached by land. There is no connection to the rest of the North American road system. Alaska borders Canada (Yukon Territory and British Columbia) to the east, and the Gulf of Alaska as part of the Pacific Ocean to the south. The Bering Sea, Bering Strait and Chukchi Sea lie to the west and Alaska borders the Arctic Ocean to the north.
