Florida is a peninsula in the southeastern United States bordering Georgia and Alabama to the north. The Atlantic Ocean is on the east coast of Florida, and the Gulf of Mexico on the west and south coasts. At the southern end of the state is a chain of islands offshore, the Florida Keys, whose name is derived from the Spanish word cayo (island). The island chain is connected by 42 bridges. Key West, probably the most famous of these islands, is located at the end. From the southernmost point of the continental USA on Key West it is still 140 kilometers to Cuba.
