Watch

A couple of weeks ago we told you about Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak and today it is time for the eternal sibling; konkurrentklassikern Patek Philippe Nautilus.

During the fair in Basel 1972 met Gerald Genta family Stern, which since 1932 owned Patek Philippe, in the restaurant at Hotel Ambassador. Audemars Piguet had the same year presented the Captain Royal Oak, which raised quite a stir and Genta was asked that at a napkin sketch up how a potential luxury steel door clock of Patek Phillippe could look like. The result was a watch inspired by Philippe Stern, who himself was a good sailor, with clear sailing in origin and with an ventilformad design, similar to the self-titled Hublot which came ten years later.Genta never managed to present their idea to Philippe Stern at the fair, but stopped on the sketch and worked further on it when he got home.

Later that year, was approached by a Genta Piaget request to design a new, sporty watch with the same characteristics as the Royal Oak (that is waterproof and wafer thin) and a bit of chance presented the sketch that would become Nautilus.Piaget thanked for the proposal but declined because they, like the finmärke they were, did not have clocks in something as simple as steel…

1974 met Gerald Genta and Philippe Stern Finally, and Stern found the design so interesting that he allowed Genta build a prototype in the white gold of the model that would later become mass production of steel. The design and construction was unmistakably Genta and a natural sibling of Royal Oak; steel with interesting finishing (with the contrast between the brushed and shiny parts), large but poor (7, 6 mm), a painting by structure (this cobalt blue with transverse ribs), Jaeger Lecoultre thin 920-machine works, a different and innovative boettdesign for arrange water density (here in the form of valve classic hinges that compress the watchcase and held together with screws) and an integrated link (which is in many respects similar to the one that ended up on the IWC Ingenieur and the GST series).

Nautilus (named after either the animal, the imaginary or real submarine; no one knows and in Geneva is silent …) came on the market in 1976 as ref 3700/1 – a model which was promoted at the same cocky way that Royal Oak. In the ads, where the mark is not shy to demonstrate that this sporty timepiece cost as much as one of gold, and even if the start of the sales were sluggish got Patek Philippe quickly an enthusiastic crowd of supporters, especially among the slightly more elegant the yacht-erati. The earliest versions of the large Nautilusen (who, like his friend Royal Oak called “Jumbo”) came in a korkklädd box that itself has become a cult and a collectibles (and inspired to Cork cover of a book about Patek Philippe that came out this year). It was released during the 1980s, in particular, a variety of variants of the Nautilus, and perhaps the rarest of all is the Jumbo in Platinum as seen below with the diamanttavla-and the sample below is actually sold in Sweden 1981.

The last was finally discontinued after 1990 and the launch of a little halvljumma variants came on 2006 emphatically back at the model’s 30-year anniversary as ref 5711. REF. 5711 has in recent years become one of the greatest ‘ it ‘ clock, and took over the Crown after Daytona as a customer at efterfrågetronen – the model is extremely popular and is produced in far smaller quantities than what the market wants, which creates a huge hype and long waiting lists of retailers. A little further from the unadorned original is two of the most popular variants-chronograph 5980 (who also has a loooong list of all traders…) and the complicated 5712 (with the moon phase, visardatum, small seconds and power reserve). Another variant is the little brother Aquanaut launched 1997, popular not least because of the attractive sporty rubber strap.
